Since 1994 our community based charity has utilised this facility to visit the 110 Primary Schools in Metropolitan Wigan. The trained Educators involved have taught anti-drug strategies and healthy living techniques. The classroom is equipped with a wide range of modern electronic and audio visual aids which stimulate children's interest and enthusiasm. Close contact is maintained between the centre and schools concerning a variety of educational issues.
The Wigan Trust was initially established by a group of Rotarians representing each of the clubs in the Wigan area namely, Ashton, Astley, Atherton, Hindley, Leigh, Tyldesley, and Wigan. The centre is funded by various grants, fundraising activities, and a levy of £3 per head from each of the pupils who attend. It is anticipated that during the next 12 months the new £60,000 + unit will be visited by more than 10,000 children
Approximately 70 dignitaries, colleagues, Rotarians and guests attended Friday's launch which gave interested parties the opportunity to view the classroom and to liaise with staff. A series of speeches outlining the philosophy of Life Education generally and the workings of the Wigan Trust in particular were given by Martin Price ( Trust Chairman), Andy Gregory ( ex Rugby League International), Sir Ian McCartney( ex M P), Joann Hitchen (Senior Educator) and others. A healthy buffet lunch was then enjoyed by all before dispersal.
In recent years the Wigan Trust has widened its activities. We now involve parents and carers by delivering workshops and programmes. Topics covered include drug prevention, sex and relation education and positive parenting. These courses help parents and carers to gain new skills and confidence so that they are able to discuss these and other difficult issues with their children.
I have attempted to summarise the rationale central to the workings of our organisation. Whilst we are attempting to inculcate a variety of skills and experiences all members of our team deem that," We are hoping to increase the children's confidence and also assisting them to make healthy choices about their future."
