Warrington Rotary Club invited Clare Bottle from Women in Logistics UK to speak about her charity work. This June, Clare is going to cycle 500km through Madagascar, raising funds for the transport charity, Transaid. Clare trekked through the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia to raise money for the same charity last year.
When she first signed up for the cycle ride, Clare didn’t even own a bike. But since buying one in November, training is going well and she recently managed 36km in South Wales, although she’s still nervous about the prospect of cycling 100km per day for five days straight across hilly terrain in a hot climate.
Transaid is a small British charity which specialises in building up transport skills in Africa so that the needy people have better access to healthcare facilities and economic opportunities. Their projects include setting up a distribution network for vaccines in Nigeria, opening training centres for commercial drivers in Zambia and Tanzania and conducting field-based research into the best designed bicycle ambulances.
