This was the message from Wigan Rotary Club recently at ASDA when shoppers were given an impromptu health test as a campaign to avoid strokes rolled into Wigan. The event is now in its fifth year and once again the town’s Rotary Club teamed up with the Stroke Association to host a Know Your Blood Pressure event at the Wigan Asda store which gave visitors free tests. Scores of clubs across the UK have been taking to the streets as part of 2012’s campaign in with the charity.
Wigan Rotary President John Walls said ‘The incidence of high blood pressure in the Wigan area is higher than the national average is not always recognised by the person, and is the biggest risk factor in the cause of strokes’ he continued ‘it can easily be treated and controlled with medication’
Rotary Club organiser Doctor Venk Mani spent the day encouraging customers to spend a few minutes being checked out and said’ All the people who volunteer to have their blood pressure estimated are given their respective readings, advice, and if need be a recommendation to consult their own general practitioner for a further check and/or treatment as appropriate.
This is one way Wigan Rotary Club are helping the community to become healthier’
