Self-styled Hobbits from Chadderton & Failsworth Rotary Club, Peter Fryer, Keith Quarmby and Brendan Linnane undertook a cycling challenge over two days in May.
They started off from Canal Warf in Leeds at 9.00am on the 25th, following the canal tow – path and finishing at the Megacentre in Liverpool at 4.00pm on the 26th, crossing most of ‘the Shire’ and overnighting at a Clayton Le Moors hostelry close by Bilbo Baggins house. The wearying journey was 128 miles in theory but 140 miles in practice, allowing for unplanned straying away from the tow – path!
This week, at the Club’s meeting on 28th August, Peter was able to announce that the sponsorship money for local charities had passed the £2000 mark and the saddle – soreness had finally faded!
Last year’s Club President, Peter Turner presented the cycling Hobbits with tour de France yellow bicycles (in miniature). The picture shows, from left to right, Peter, Keith and Brendon showing off their well-earned yellow bikes.
